Our Story

Sound Roots is owned and operated by Fara and Chris Heath.  We met when we were both in college in Boston. Our mutual love for music bonded us instantly.  We moved to Portland shortly after we got married 7 years ago.  Our family also includes our amazing 2 year old son Miles, Luna the Wonderdog, and Penny & Gracie - of the feline persuasion.

Chris got his bachelor’s degree from Berklee College of Music with a major in song writing and film scoring. He is a lifelong music student with a wide array of musical abilities including keyboard, guitar, drums, mandolin, and voice. He has been working as a professional music teacher and recording artist for nearly 12 years. He recently obtained a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Portland. He is Sound Roots Lead Educator and oversees all curricula and coursework. He also teaches selective classes several times a week and is available for private lessons.

Fara has a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern University in Human Services and has spent the majority of her career working with youth and working in the arts. She has has a true passion for music and loves running Sound Roots. She will probably be the first face you see when you come to Sound Roots and will be happy you talk to about setting up lessons or to answer any questions you may have about our school.

Sound Roots is a long time dream of ours. We are proud residents of the neighborhood in which we have established our business, and we have an ardent interest in being a positive influence on our growing community.  Music is a big part of our family's life and we feel so blessed to be able to share that with you.
